Top 10 Video

1. This is completely different than what I have ever done in any of my K-12 classes ! For example when I was in 10th grade I did a PowerPoint presentation. I have done art projects. But in 4th grade had no idea, things like this even existed !

2. My personal learning style is addressed in this video because I am a visual and hands-on type of learner. For example doing the Voki, I can visually see the information and also type it own my own!

3. I am far not surprised that this was able to be done with out textbooks. In today society there are so many different ways that you can look up information. In my future classroom I will use different tools like this in order to simply make it exciting for the students !

4. I honestly would only have one major concern. That is simply, is this information credible? But that question would be solved easily by using Easy Who Is .

The Importance of Blogging

1. The thing that I like about the use of blogging is that it is a technological way of having a public journal. Maybe it can be used to post homework for your classes!

2. Having a blog can make me more effective as an teacher because it keeps me modern and relevant with my students, rather than using textbooks.

3. I might not continue this blog, only because it was strictly for class. But what I was thinking was to use all the tools that we have learned in class and start my own!

4. Appropriation - I say this because, when using the online tool called Voki, you can get your information across in a unique way.

Wikipedia

A. Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that can be accessed online, and anyone can edit it.
B. Even though anyone can edit this information, it is all reviewed before put out in public.
C. They rely on the "wisdom of the crowd".
D. Larry Sanger left because he thought that it should be left to experts.
E. Vandalism would be talking about a heart and putting what your personal opinion of what a heart might be like to you.
F. This reveals that Wikipedia is something that has been used by everyone that has ever used Google search.
G. I think Wikipedia is so successful simply because of Google. Everyone uses Google at some point in there lives. If Google is that prominent then so will Wikipedia.
H. They wouldn't want to have advertises because it can taint the image of it all.
I. What it does is help prevent big businesses and politicians from putting there opinionated information on the web.

As you see on the graph the highest peaked occurred in the blue (level 1). That score almost reached 80%. The lowest peaked occurred also in the blue (level 1). This peak was at almost at 12% (11.86%). In regards to wither it is a bi modal or not. It looks like there is Bi modal in this graph.

Media Literacy vs. Traditional Literacy

"Although some countries (notably Canada, England, and Australia) have made progress in integrating media literacy into the school curriculum, schools in the United States generally have lagged behind (Hobbs & Frost, 2003). U.S. students may learn something about evaluating sources in research paper assignments and learn to recognize propaganda in social studies, but that's often the extent of their media literacy instruction."
The importance of this quote to me is the fact that it spoke about the fact that we supposedly learn different subjects, but in reality we don't learn anything. Are we really learning something if we just cram it into our heads? In everything we read or even things viewed, it has a bigger picture.  People in society wonder why the United States is behind. Maybe there is something I miss, that makes me very confused on why can't we be # 1 in education? Obviously traditional isn't working, in order to give students  the best education that there is possible. Media Literacy is something that makes the viewer dig deeper than what they see. What will it take for that to change in America? Hopefully we can do something soon about it !

The Picture I chose shows kids unveiling an tv, that shows the globe. Media Literacy is access to the world !

Seven Power Lens

"We know that 75 percent of American adolescents are online (U.S. Census,2002) and 85 percent of all Internet users expect to find key news information online (Horrigan and Rainie,2002). Yet “the adolescents of the
nineties are more isolated and more unsupervised than other generations” (Hersch, 1998). The tools of visual,
media, and information literacy must be taught in school because they will (or won’t) be used at home."

Debbie, Abilock. "A Seven Power-Lens on 21st Century Literacy." n. page. Print.

In this quote it states that the majority of adolescents in the world use the internet for their news. I know personally I do look on my phone at apps before I even go turn on my TV. Its so amazing how when I wake up I look on my phone. Why not make it accessible to students to look at even when they are in the classroom. For those students who aren't really into school, maybe this can be the difference maker. Maybe it can be now more interesting for kids! The Picture I choose shows kids using Apple products and they are having so much fun. Imagine if every kid classroom was like that!

President Obama Difference !

In this Photo it looks like President Obama is the Leader hands down. He is in the middle of the picture which usually symbolizes a position of power. Also as you see in this Photo they look like there is something funny that was being said. Maybe they are not worried about the spill. I assume nothing to worry about!

 People Objects  Activities
President Obama His Hair  His hair is gray and shows the stress.
President Obama His Hair His hair is gray and shows the stress.
President Obama Right side of his shirt and face. If you put two quadrants together you see that his looks very sad. Wants to really figure out what the issue is.
President Obama Left side of his shirt and face.

Looking at President Obama, it really looks like he has alot going on. He doesn't look to happy about the current circumstances. The stress that is on his face is never good at all. If you observe even his hair you see that it has become very gray. It is amazing how events can change your mood.

If you compare both of them the question is, what shows you more Leadership? In my personal opinion I like the picture with him, the Governors, and Mayors. This shows more leadership to me because there are other people that could be in a position of power. But the fact is, it is him that is in the middle and not anyone else. I was always taught that the person who is either in the middle or ahead of a pack is the Leader. So to me this picture shows more leadership!

My Learning Style

According to VARK , I have a multi modal learning style. I agree that I have this type of learning style because I tend to understand things in different ways. depending on what it is, I can learn about it psychically, visually, and/ or in an auditory way. Personally I feel like it is better to be Multi Modal because you can learn from different teachers and not have to worry about if you can understand the information given.

As you see on my Picasso Head you see that my mouth, ears, and eyes are all enlarged because those are thinks that I can use to Learn !

The reason behind the Digital Story

The reason for my Digital Story is too show what todauys looks like in the envinorment I came from. There are some many things that are wrong with society today. It hurts me to see things the way that they are. How can we not care about our future? The video simply breaks down my logic:
1. Understand the problem
2. Have a vision
3. Put it into play
4. Come together
5. Succeed

ISTE relates to the digital story because the teachers who actually are all about digital learning. Understand my logic already. As long as we can all be on one page, nothing will be able to stop us! We can promote learning by letting our kids do there own digital story maybe like once a month !

A Projected lesson plan :

Students use Glogster. With Glogster, students can make there own posters !
    1. Have students make there own poster and exspress themselves.

Media Literacy

1. Students are able to upload thier multimedia projects to Youtube, as long as they show credit to the publisher.

" Because media literacy education cannot thrive unless learners themselves
2. Alot of educators believe that there is a limitation to the amount of things that can be shown. In all reality there is no main guideline that we all must go by.

" Educational guidelines have often hurt more than they have helped." - Code of Best Practice

3. Legally you are suppose to get permission from the original creator of the resource !

" Wherever possible, educators should provide attribution for quoted
material, and of course they should use only what is necessary for the educational
goal or purpose. " - Code of Best practice
have the opportunity to learn about how media functions at the most practical
level, educators using concepts and techniques of media literacy should be free to
enable learners to incorporate, modify, and re-present existing media objects in their
own classroom work. " - Code of Best Practice

Technology Rapidly Changing

Are digital media changing language ?

Quote :

"Yes, young people sometimes accidentally slip a btw (by the way) into a school essay. But a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project confirms that middle school and high school students understand what kind of language is appropriate in what context (Lenhart, Smith, & Macgill, 2008). What's more, scholars of new media language, such as David Crystal and Beverly Plester, remind us that the new technologies encourage creativity, which can spill over into school writing (Crystal, 2008; Plester, Wood, & Bell, 2008)."

Reaction :

When I read this article all I could do was smile the whole time. Like I shared in class, my father feels that texting and all other technologies that we use now and days is bad for verbal communication. As we all see this is no longer just a verbal society everything is now over the internet or through the air. I also think about my sister when I see this. When she texts, she always uses slang. I feel like we all do it ! Even my grandma! So why can't the educators adapt and be just as creative as the students?

New Technology !

As we all know in modern society technology is changing around us daily. With the world changing we must adapt! There are two tools that are out there that we can use to make this adaptation easier. Wordle and Poll Everywhere.

Wordle is also known as a text analyis tool. With this you can use it to show how important a word is compared to other words. For example: if I ask who is the greastest athlete of all time, I have two options. First option is I can do a poll and which ever answer is picked the most will be the biggest word as you see on my previous blog. The second option is that you can also put words in there as a pyramid. So if I ask give me 10 words that can describe you. The word that describes you best, I want you to type the word 10 times and so on. It would all show up the same exact way.

Poll everywhere is Amazing tool! I really loved this one! With this you can create your own poll, and how people respond via computer, twitter, text message, facebook, and etc. As you see the poll I did (that is still going on) was about wither or not the educational system is working or is a "bust"! So far I have gotten many responses and I love the different views of it. Try it out this is free!

These tools are shown on my site ! check them out and see for yourself!

ISTE is also up to date with understanding that in this world today, we need to be technological in our classrooms. Why not make reading fun? why not teach kids how create and exspress positive things over the interenet? If we are able to incorperate these tools into actual classrooms nationwide. We would reallly be the # 1 country in education!

Integrating Technology in the Classroom

"That classroom needs new ways of measuring progress, tailored to digital times--rather than to the industrial age or some artsy utopia where everyone gets an awesome for effort." (Heffernan, August 7, 2011)."

My reaction :

I totally agree with this quote because it is a proven fact that these state test don't prove anything, but that all students aren't great test takers. I remember when I was in grade school and I had to take a test. Personally I am not the best test taker but I can sit down with anyone and speak to them about anything. When I got my results back I saw that a kid who wasn't that intellectual received a higher grade than I did. So I believe it is not about what you put on piece of paper that should be measured. It should what is in your brain that you can express.

Me

My name is Mzuri King.I am a New York native. New York is a place where oppurtunity to live the American Dream is closer than it seems. I am an 19 year old college student who is aspiring to be a Doctor. I have a serious passion for making a difference in children's lifes. People say it is a challenge dealing with kids because of the harmones changing. But from all the different people who played a role in my life, it is only right to do the same for another. I have a clear understanding of what kids go through on a daily basis. I would love to assist kids on the Socondary level of learning. I can't wait!!

First Day

Education is key! It is the foundation to any and everything that we use today in society! Think about it!
