Are digital media changing language ?

Quote :

"Yes, young people sometimes accidentally slip a btw (by the way) into a school essay. But a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project confirms that middle school and high school students understand what kind of language is appropriate in what context (Lenhart, Smith, & Macgill, 2008). What's more, scholars of new media language, such as David Crystal and Beverly Plester, remind us that the new technologies encourage creativity, which can spill over into school writing (Crystal, 2008; Plester, Wood, & Bell, 2008)."

When I read this article all I could do was smile the whole time. Like I shared in class, my father feels that texting and all other technologies that we use now and days is bad for verbal communication. As we all see this is no longer just a verbal society everything is now over the internet or through the air. I also think about my sister when I see this. When she texts, she always uses slang. I feel like we all do it ! Even my grandma! So why can't the educators adapt and be just as creative as the students?

  1. I used this exact same quote Mzuri and I see your point with the use of slang and text lingo. However, do you really think it is a good idea for our teachers to start using slang and text lingo in our classrooms and remove the essential use of grammar and spelling that kids will need in their careers and future schooling as well.

I do think teachers could be a little less uptight abou it. Yet, the classroom should still be a place where literacy is priority.

  2. I agree with your post Mzuri. The texting slang and lingo is being used by more and more people everyday. The movement is growing and if teachers adapted to it they would connect better to their students.
